Mineral Head Colourist, Aleesha Bolton, gives you the low down on the 3 most commonly asked questions she gets regarding hair colour.

What’s the latest hair colour trend?

We can take vague reference from trends but it is still important to ensure that the trend works for you. I like to keep colour more personal than just what is in fashion. What suits your skin and eyes? Your wardrobe? Your seasonal mood? Keep things interesting by making changes every now and then but keep your look stylish with a colour that’s just for you, no fashion necessary.

Why does my hair fade to reddish tones?

All hair colour is made up of red, yellow and blue pigment. Blue is the first to be rinsed out by shampoo or things like chlorine pools or salt water, leaving red and yellow which are in your hair naturally. Try to not unnecessarily wash your hair this winter to keep your colour. Always use Aveda products because they are designed to support your hair and not over cleanse. Be realistic with your expectations and decide whether it’s worth fighting the warm tones with counteracting colour conditioners or going with it and enjoying warm, healthy looking hair.

I’m going grey, what are my options?

As the pigmentation in our hair fades, the strands become white, not grey. It depends on your natural colour which is mixed in with the white as to what colour it appears to the eye. For example, white plus dark brown looks grey, white plus blonde looks white.

Remaining natural that can look good if you do it right. Invest in really smart haircuts and consider violet toners to keep the white clean and free from yellow. Aveda Blue Malva conditioner is helpful to maintain yellow free hair, keeping your white hair fresh and crisp.

If you want to completely cover the white, you can choose from soft, medium or dense coverage depending on your hair and the look you want. Alternatively, you can achieve a more refined look by refraining from full coverage and using a foil technique and close to your natural colour to blend the white and make it less obvious, yet still embracing it.

If you currently have an all-over colour and wish to transition to a softer look, we can make a plan together on how to transition into this and I will explain the stages of the process.

Thinking ahead is always a great plan with colour – hair colour is a constantly evolving journey for your look. Sometimes patience and slow transitions of colour can give you the best look. Colour can be both high maintenance and low maintenance, so talk to us about creating a hair plan for you that suits your lifestyle.

X Aleesha
